Chinese Tea Party Crafts

PARTY CRAFTS:

Chinese Pencil & Pen Pot:

Materials:
  • Tubing made of cardboard - the sort that posters are carried in
  • Posterboard
  • Newspaper
  • Wallpaper paste
  • Liquid Soap
  • Water-based paint
  • White glue
  • A mixing bowl
  • Paintbrushes
  • Scissors
  • Decorative Trim

Instructions:

    Make A Comb:

  1. Make a painting "comb" with a piece of stiff posterboard paper. Cut a small rectangle of posterboard 10.2cm x 3.8cm (4in. x 1.5in.). Cut small V-shaped notches along one of the short sides. This creates a painting "comb".
  2. Prepare The Paint:

  3. Combine 237mL (1 cup) of wallpaper paste with 10mL (2 teaspoons) of paint, and 5mL (1 teaspoon) of liquid soap.
  4. Paint The Posterboard:

  5. Place newspaper under a sheet of posterboard paper.

  6. Brush the paint-paste mixture thickly onto your posterboard.
  7. Next, take your painting comb and drag a repeating pattern into the paste. Be sure to wipe the comb on your newspaper when it becomes clogged with the paint-paste mixture.
  8. Work quickly before the paint mixture dries. Once you are finished, allow the paper to dry completely.
  9. Prepare The Pencil Pot:

  10. Cut away the top from a length of cardboard tubing. The bottom of the tubing with its closed-end is what you will use.
  11. Paint the inside of the tubing. Allow time for the paint to dry completely.
  12. Once it has dried, cut your painted paper to size. Glue it around the outside of the tubing to completely cover it.
  13. Finally, use a small piece of cloth or lace trim to decorate the top edge of your pencil pot.

A Chinese Tangram Puzzle:

Materials:
  • Black posterboard - or any sturdy construction paper
  • The classic tangram design

Instructions:

  1. The Chinese tangram is an ancient puzzle game that requires a fair measure of human imagination and creativity.
  2. Trace the tangram pattern onto your sturdy black construction paper.
  3. Cut out each shape in the tangram design. You should have: 2 large triangles, 1 medium triangle, 2 small triangles, 1 parallelogram, and 1 square.

  5. The object of this game is to arrange the puzzle pieces into recognizable silhouettes.
  6. The only rules for this game are: a) All seven pieces must be used in your design. b) The pieces cannot overlap, and c) The pieces must be touching (just not overlapping).
  7. Divide your party guests into teams and see which team can come up with the most tangrams!

  • Variety of bright ribbons

  3. Using the masking tape: tape the edges of the plates together, leaving a space for the insertion of the stick handle.
  4. Insert the stick handle. Tape firmly around the handle. The fit should be tight, and should not wobble.
  5. Next, cover the rattle with multiple layers of masking tape. The tape should be torn into pieces and applied a single piece at a time.
  6. Once you have a fairly thick and uniform coating of tape, paint the entire rattle.
  7. While the paint is drying, prepare the mask that you will apply to the rattle. Use the construction and drawing paper to create a dragon face with large eyes and flared nostrils. Glue on large ears and create a paper fringe to place around the dragons mouth.
  8. Glue the dragon face to the one side of the dried rattle.
  9. For a nice finishing touch tie many colorful ribbons around the rattle's handle!
